Digital Radiography
Digital radiography is used to view images of bone and soft tissue. It is an invaluable tool used most often in lameness examinations and pre-purchase examination.
The images are digital, rather than film, and therefore they are available immediately, allowing for quick, on-site assessment of problems. The ability to manipulate the images on the computer and enhance specific regions of the image allows for better visualization of the problem areas.
Radiography is most commonly used in horses to view problems within the legs, however it can also be used to evaluate the skull, teeth and spine.
Ultrasonography
Diagnostic ultrasonography is used extensively for the evaluation of tendons and ligaments to identify and monitor soft tissue injuries. The basic objective of an ultrasonographic evaluation is to characterize the size, shape, echogenicity (brightness) and fiber pattern of soft tissue structures in the region of interest. These findings are considered carefully in conjunction with the clinical examination to determine the significance of the injury.
Ultrasonography is also used to evaluated the mares reproductive tract during a breeding soundness examination and during the breeding season. We can also determine if a mare is pregnant!
At EquiVets Victoria we have the ability to perform complete exams in the field with our digital portable ultrasound unit.
Endoscopy
An endoscope is essentially a long, flexible camera, which can be inserted up the horse’s nasal passages to visualise the larynx (throat) and upper section of the trachea (windpipe).
Endoscopy is a used to evaluate the upper respiratory tract (URT) of horses, who may have a "wind problem" (making a noise when working), may be bleeding during work or who may have an URT infection. The examination is conducted in a standing horse at rest and after exercise.
Abnormalities seen on resting endoscopic exams include laryngeal paralysis (roarers), epiglottic entrapment, and arytenoid chondritis (infection of the arytenoid cartilage), exercise induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH), infections of the URT and gutteral pouches and many other conditions.
Laboratory Work
With the support of two of the premier equine veterinary laboratories in Victoria, EquiVets Victoria is equipt to do all your required laboratory work, from routine blood tests, including hormone assays, to culture and sensitivity of non responding conditions.
Most results (depending on the test) are received the same day as submission.
